Lighting of the Christ Candle

Call to Worship:
We have lit the candle symbolizing Jesus Christ the Light of the world.
Today we begin the journey towards Good Friday when we extinguished that light.
Only those who have not lived can be innocent.
When we begin to experience the joys and sorrows of life, the highs and lows, the good and the bad, our innocence disappears.
Adam, humankind, wanted to know good and evil, what was right and what was wrong, so we stepped out into the flow of life and discovered that we are naked before God, that nothing we do or are can be hidden from God.
We left innocence of the ideal garden behind and the darkness began to creep in.
So we symbolically darken our First Lenten Candle as we approach Good Friday.
Extinquishing of First Lenten Candle.
Prayer of Approach.

God, why is life always a mixture of joy and sorrow, of good and bad, of hope and despair? Why do good people suffer? Why do we so often experience discord when we seek peace? Why can’t life be simple and good? As we journey through Lent, may we re-discover the faith that helps us deal with all of life’s hard questions, and may we again see how the cross, a symbol of pain and suffering becomes a symbol of hope and victory. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen
