September 2012

A New Church Season Begins

The fall season is always a “new beginning” for our congregation as Sunday School, our music programs and the Youth Group all begin their “new year”.  But this fall is special.  Indeed, it may well be remembered as one of those watershed times for Grace United Church.

In a church as in every organization or institution, there are key times and events that have a major impact on its future.  For a school, it may be the arrival of a new principal who is able to provide the stability and direction that the school-community had been lacking.  For a business, it may be the introduction of a new technology.  For a family farm, it may be when the next generation of farmer begins making the key decisions!

Having Rev. Paul DuVal begin his ministry with our congregation this September makes this a very special time for Grace.  We are so blessed that he has accepted our “call” to join our Grace family.  We very much look forward to his guidance and leadership.

But also this month, planning the re-development of our church begins in earnest as Architect George Berry meets with our congregation on September 12.  (More on this elsewhere in this newsletter.)

What kind of church do we want to be?  What kind of church building do we need to support that ministry?  Might our facility redevelopment include space for services and community partnerships that would compliment our Christian mission?   These and other questions will continue to be pondered as we journey together.

Meet and Greet Rev. DuVal      Sunday, September 2

While Rev. DuVal will not conduct his first worship service as our new minister until September 9, he will be present and will be introduced to the congregation on Sunday, September 2.

If you plan to be home on the Labour Day Weekend, this will be wonderful opportunity to meet Rev. Paul.  We hope you will also plan to stay after worship for refreshments and fellowship.  What a great time to chat with Rev. Paul and “catch up’ with old friends.

Facility Report - George Berry, Architect

Before engaging in conceptual planning for our “new church”, Central Board engaged George Berry of Berry Architecture and Associates of Red Deer and a team of engineers to conduct an assessment of our church facility.  This structural, mechanical and electrical assessment focused primarily on the condition of that portion of the church that was built in 1961 (sanctuary, a portion of the narthex and the “meeting room”).  A draft report has been shared with the members of the Defining and Designing Committee (D and D Committee).  However, the actual report will be presented to and discussed with the congregation at an information meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 12 at 7:00 pm in the Upper Hall

After a brief discussion of the well-known deficiencies of our current facility, Mr. Berry will discuss the issues related to redeveloping our church facility on the current site and share some “very preliminary” design ideas!

This meeting is an excellent opportunity for you to learn about this project and meet the architect who may well be engaged to lead it. Discussions leading to the engaging of an architect will follow the completion of the facility-assessment work by George Berry and Associates.

Anyone who considers the United Church of Canada or Grace United as their “home-church” is invited and urged to attend this meeting and become involved in this exciting project.

Thanks to All!!

…church members and “friends of Grace” alike for the hundreds of hours of work at or in support of the Fair Booth operation. The Grace United Fair Booth is a long-standing tradition at the Lloyd Ex and the CPCA Finals that benefits the community and our church in a variety of ways.  Word is that the fellowship and financial receipts were “very good”!

A special debt of gratitude is due Marilyn McAllister and her leadership team of Karen Ollen, Jan McCook, Rhonda Sather, Deb Lundquist, Garry and Sherlane Phillips, Chelsey Christian, Joyce Dickson, Beckie Schille, Susan Ward and Marilyn Mann.

Building Fundraising Update

We hope everyone had a great summer and is ready to get back at this fall!  Although things slowed down for our committee over the summer, we still have been busy selling grocery coupons and now have raised over $18,000 dollars from this fundraiser!  Where are we going? Higher!  We will continue to sell the grocery cards and will start back selling them after church in early September. What else have we been up to?  Well... We have also been looking into the possibility of selling debentures and will have more information about that later in September. We are also looking forward to working with Diane Strickland. Diane was one of the leaders of the Designing and Defining Grace workshops and she will be helping us with the next phase of our fundraising.  You will be hearing lots from us this fall so get ready!!  Finally, we also wanted to add that we are so excited to see the next steps being taken for the building and we know that as they are revealed that the congregation will be putting the pressure on our committee to wrap up the fundraising so we can start building!  It should be an exciting fall!

Are you on Facebook?  So are WE!

If you have not already joined us then why not LIKE us and follow along.  It is a great way to stay up-to-date! Not a Facebooker then you you can check out the website for archived services, announcements and upcoming events!

- starts on September 9 but, of course, children may start attending any time throughout the year.

Ron Klusmeier's Tour of a Lifetime – stops at Grace!!

It probably is not exaggerating to say that Ron Klusmeier has had more impact on the music of our church in the past couple of generations than anyone else.  He has worked with nearly 2,000 churches and composed over 500 hymn tunes, many of which are published in the hymnbooks of major Christian denominations in North America.

As he prepares to retire after a 41-year ministry career, he has embarked on one final tour on behalf of Canadian Food Grains Bank, raising funds for and awareness of world hunger.  Christina, his life and career partner, tours with him presenting workshops on her field of expertise – effective use of technology in the context of worship.  Ron also conducts music workshops the afternoon prior to each concert.

Ron and Christina will be making a tour stop at Grace United Church on Tuesday, September 25.  More information can be found on our church website or by contacting the church office at (780) 875-8959.  Space is limited so get your tickets soon to avoid disappointment.

The workshop schedule for the tour stop at Grace United is as follows:

Music Workshop from 4 – 6 pm.              Free with your concert ticket but you must register in advance by calling (780) 875-8959.

Mass Choir Practice at 6 pm.            Open to anyone who has purchased a concert ticket.

Technology Workshop from 4 – 6 pm.  Cost of the workshop is $30 per person.
