“A Candle is Burning”
A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,
a candle of hope in December’s dark night.
While angels sing blessings from heaven’s starry sky,
our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh.
*Call to Worship (Psalm 122 from ‘Everyday Psalms’, by James Taylor)
LDR: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen. God calls people everywhere to a pilgrimage.
PPL: From all over the world, many feet beat a path to God’s holy places.
LDR: They struggle over high mountain passes;
PPL: they shuffle across dusty deserts;
LDR: they crawl along the walls of river canyons.
PPL: Straggling lines of searchers converge in a fertile valley;
LDR: a great shout of joy goes up to the heavens.
PPL: Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus – in common cause the great religions rise above doctrinal differences…
LDR: May they not threaten each other;
PPL: may they generate peace among their peoples.
LDR: God, watching over them, says, “…because they are brothers and sisters, meeting in harmony, I will treat them as my own.”
PPL: Because they do God’s will, God welcomes them.
* “All Earth is Waiting” #5 VU
* Opening Advent Prayer (from VU p 26; praying together, please)
Who are we, O God,
that you should come to us?
Yet you have visited your people
and redeemed us in your Son.
As we prepare to celebrate his birth,
our hearts leap for joy
at the sound of your Word,
and we are moved by your Spirit
to bless your wonderful works.
For we are richly blessed in him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near, even your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.
For those Young in Heart

Scripture for Today
Jesus won’t come to us physically, but we may encounter Holy Presence in a deeper, more fulfilling way. However, our ‘liberty-and-fun-immersed’ society may not help us quest for Divine Presence through the Season of Advent. How might we counter that affect and enter into the spirit of expectancy?
In this section of Isaiah’s poem, we are welcomed to intentionally quest for what may be called ‘God-nation’.
Anthem: “Walking in the Light”
*reproduced with permission LiscenSing #6560
Sermon “They Knew Mary Had a Baby, but…”
Worshiping with our Offerings
Sung Response: “Oh, What a Wonderful Gift”
*words & music by Linnea Good
Chorus: Oh what a wonderful gift!
Oh what a wonderful gift!
God gives lives of hope and love,
Oh, what a wonderful gift!
So, as we bring our gifts,
And offer them with pray’r,
May we be people seeking peace
And justice ev’rywhere……….
Prayer of Thanks and Dedication

Mission Statement: In response to God’s call, we the congregation of Grace United Church understand our mission is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to all ages. Using the Bible as our guide, we are challenged to worship and praise and celebrate God’s love and accept God’s grace, learn God’s will, live in faith, and reach out in humble service in the community and the world.
