The Options for the Future Committee developed some sketches of what a “new” church on the current site could look like as it tried to determine if redevelopment on the current site was even feasible. Now we need to decide just exactly what type of structure and what kinds of spaces we want to incorporate into our new structure.
To get a better sense of some of the issues that need to be considered when a congregation embarks on a major facility project, a group from our congregation attended a weekend workshop in Edmonton in September led by Rev. Joel Den Haan and Rev. Diane Strickland, both from the Calgary area. And what a wonderful event it was!!
All agreed that it would be great for Grace United if we could have a similar event - just for us at Grace!
Defining and Designing the 'New Grace'
“What is God calling us to do?” and “What kind of building do we need for that mission?" are questions that will guide our deliberations at a weekend event to be held at Grace on the weekend of January 6 – 8. See below.
Now that we have decided that we will be rebuilding on the current site, we need to consider what kind of facility is best suited to our needs. We are blessed to have church leaders in Alberta-Northwest Conference of the United Church with the expertise and experience to assist us!
It is the planning committee’s hope that this weekend event will:
- Help us to clarify our mission as a church.
- Build momentum for our building project.
- Address doubts, fears, questions and concerns about the project.
- Help us to prepare for and celebrate the changes that this project will mean for our congregation.
Below is an overview of the weekend event. While all are invited to participate in all sessions, we are organizing activities so that people can attend as their busy schedule permits!
