WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER FOR HEALING

Sacred Spirit who moves within and between.

Through you,

we are assured of Love which gathers us in and renews us with worship.

We are quick to receive your boundless welcome,

and with eager hands, we accept the sacramental gift of your grace.

But we are aware of the times we become satisfied with our own inclusion

and we do not enact the divine hospitality planted deep within our very nature.

When we cannot seem to look beyond our institutional walls,

help us to open our eyes

When we imagine ourselves to be more valuable than others,

put us in our proper place.

When we think only of self-maintenance,

Encourage us, as we pray to you,

To ponder how to care for the whole

(silent prayers, meditation)

WORDS OF GRACE AND COMFORT

In the soul of God, we each have a place of honour where the Spirit nourishes us.

Filled with God’s abundant love, we can extend ourselves in new and life-giving ways.

We are refreshed to live the love of God.

SUMMER STUDENTS THANK YOU

Throughout this summer we have had many different opportunities to interact with everyone in and around the Church. From our first five weeks of Activity Mornings and VBS to helping with Outreach every Thursday, we have loved every minute of it!  We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been in the Church and the entire congregation for being so welcoming and accepting of us. We have learned so much and it’s been a privilege to work at Grace and spend time with the youth of our community. This summer has given us so much more than a chance to work with kids, it has taught us real-world lessons that we will carry with us throughout our lives. To any who we have had a chance to interact with, it was lovely to meet and spend time with you. We will miss the kind faces and helping hands that we have got to spend our summer with. We hope to see you again soon!

Best Wishes, Kathleen Gunn, Ashley Holman, Brenden Pollard, and Jonathan Rollheiser.

CONNECTING COMMUNITY

Do you know of someone who would like to tell their story?  Do they defy a stereotype?  Have they overcome a hardship?  Do you think they have a story that would help others?  If so, we are looking for more people to become storytellers in the "My Life is an Open Book" series.  Contact Lana if this is something that interests you or someone you know.  Storytellers are expected to give thought and write out their stories before sharing in front of the group.

On a Connecting Community scheduled day, stories will be shared live in front of a 4-5 people audience for 40-45 minutes with follow-up questions and comments.  The goal of this Connecting Community series is to challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue.  When we learn more about each other, the GATEWAY TO THE HEART opens a little wider. STORIES coming together for September Connection include:

I'm an Adult living with PTSD…

ADHD in adulthood…

Mental health challenges and how they've made me who I am…

I'm a parent of a child with special needs…

A lot of planning is going into our first Connecting Community, My Life is an Open Book series.  This series is as a result of the New Horizon's Seniors Program Grant we received in the spring, and is targeted on feeding the mind, body, and soul of Seniors in our congregation and community. The following is the upcoming schedule for Wednesday, September 28th.

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER FOR HEALING (Adapted with permission from Seasons of the Spirit Online 2022)

Healing God, when we shoulder burdens not ours to carry,

unfold us with your grace.

When we clench our fists and hearts with rage and anger,

soften us with your grace.

When we let ourselves become overwhelmed with things around us and ignore people,

help us to feel your grace.

When we make unwise choices, or those we know are unfaithful,

give us the grace to choose again.

When we allow our doubts to shut us down rather than open us to new ways,

grace us with your gift of risk and vulnerability.

We ask this healing as we pray to you now….

(silent prayers, meditation)

WORDS OF GRACE AND COMFORT

God who is our rock, refuge and rescuer, heal our hearts with love and grace.

We are set free to live new and everlasting lives. Thanks be to God.

It is time for human beings, especially those of White colonial backgrounds, to have some humility. The assumption of having dominion over the earth has caused destruction and climate change. Now is the time to be humble and to pay attention to those who can show another way.

STEWARDSHIP SECONDS

Feeling anxious, worried, or fearful? Giving and gratitude are the antidote for an anxious brain and a news cycle that tells us there is not enough.

VBS

VBS- Registrations continue to come in for next week's Vacation Bible School.  Special thanks to Heather Ballek and Gayle Diduck for making 21 Superhero capes for the kids to decorate and to Bev and her team at Fabricland for donating all the material and supplies.  An incredible amount of planning has gone into VBS and we are grateful to our storytellers Sheila Coulter, Colleen Groenen, Jenson Brown and Lana Lane.  We look forward to an awesome week of activities planned by our Summer Students Kathleen Gunn, Ashley Holman and Brenden Pollard.  What a wonderful week it will be!  AND... the upcoming week will be the last week for our Summer Student crew!  Wow, where has summer gone?

Monday-Thursday August 22-25 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

GETTING TO KNOW OUR SUMMER STUDENTS BETTER...

This week's question... If you could have a super power what would it be?

Kathleen-  Why???  Flying would be cool.

Ashley- Teleportation so I could go anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds

Brenden- It would be laser eyes because then I could burn anything in my path.

Jonathan- I would want the ability to pause time. I would be able to enjoy all of my favourite moments in life at whatever speed I want.

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER OF HEALING

Almighty God, we are not always people who live by faith.

We know we were created in your image,

yet we treat ourselves and each other in ways that do not honour your presence within.

Your laws and commandments teach us to live in ways that help our neighbours.

We choose otherwise and live in ways that harm our neighbours, rather than help.

We hear your call to reach out to those most in need.

Instead, we turn our backs on them and you

We pray now, O God, help us day by day to run life’s race placed before us.

Help us to persevere, guided through prayer which we offer you now…

(silent prayers, meditation)

WORDS OF GRACE AND COMFORT

What is hoped and prayed for is true.

Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of faith brings grace and renewal to our hearts.

Thanks be to God. Amen

STEWARDSHIP SECONDS

Caring for the financial health of your community of faith is not a sprint to be accomplished with one worship or one campaign. It is a marathon that is only accomplished over time by developing relationships, expressing gratitude, and teaching  generosity as a spiritual practice.

ACTIVITY MORNINGS

Can you believe we are entering the last week of Activity mornings?  Over the summer we have had over 60 children registered!!!  Where has summer gone?  Last week was full of wonderful lessons on the importance of spending time together, celebrating friendship even though we are all different, and the importance of getting off the couch and enjoying the outdoors!  This week will be much the same with over 15 kids coming through the doors!  YAY GOD. Here is the link to register: https://form.jotform.com/221573464209254

Ashley – be outside

Brenden – hang out with friends, play baseball and watch movies

Jonathan – play the piano and make YouTube videos for my channel

As beloved children of God, all are included in the life and ministry of the Grace Family where diversity is celebrated.  We remember, as we celebrate God’s presence in Worship, that Grace United Church gathers on Treaty 6 land, the traditional territory of the Plains, Wood Cree, and Assiniboine peoples. As Treaty people, we seek to live with respect on this land and live in peace and friendship with all our relations.

CONNECTING COMMUNITY

LOOKING for Storytellers- Do you defy a stereotype?  Have you overcome a hardship?  Do you have a story you think would help others?  If so, we are looking for more people to become storytellers in the "My Life is an Open Book" series.  Contact Lana if this is something that interests you.  If you are willing to be a storyteller, you are expected to give some thought and write out your story before sharing infront of the group.  On a Connecting Community scheduled day, you will share your story live in front of a 4-5 people audience for 40-45 minutes with follow-up questions and comments.  The goal of this Connecting Community series is to challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue.  When we learn more about each other, the gateway to the heart opens a little wider.

INSTALLATION OF THE 44th MODERATOR OF THE UNITED CHURCH

In a service brimming with joy, the Right Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne, Kwisa’lakw was installed as the 44th Moderator of the United Church of Canada.  Held on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, the service was lifestreamed across the country with over 500 people watching.

Chief Dr. Robert Joseph began a tender chorus of “How Great Thou Art” which brought the congregation to its feet, joining him in song.  Moderator Lansdowne led the procession from the church accompanied in Heiltsuk song and drum.  For more information here is the link to the remainder of the article:

YOUTH CONFIRMATION l Beginning this Fall l Grade 10 & beyond.

What is confirmation?

The continuation of Christian growth which began at baptism.

In confirmation, we remember our Baptism, renew our covenant (promises) that our

parents made for us when we were baptized.

Confirmation is not only an opportunity for us to “confirm” our commitment to God and

the Church, it is

      - an opportunity to continue to learn and grow in faith, your understanding of God,

        Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

      - a time to look into the Bible and talk about how it is relevant in today’s world.

      - an opportunity to develop some tools that will help you come closer to God.

      - a time to learn about the gifts God has given you and how you will use them in

        the world to serve another.

      - learning about worship, social justice and service.

      - a way to get to know more people in the church and community.

      - experimentation, friendship in action, a safe place to make mis-takes.

      - a committed time for the church community and God to publicly and visibly

“confirm” their commitment to you, as a part of the whole people of God.

Please speak to Rev. Cathy if you are interested in being a part of youth

confirmation.

We will meet once a week from Mid-September to mid-November.  This will include an

overnight retreat at the church. Time and dates will be determined by everyone’s schedules.

NEW FAMILY TO LLOYDMINSTER FROM THE UKRAINE

One of Grace’s congregational members has a new family living across the street.

The family has arrived with little from war-torn Ukraine. Would you have any extra basic

household items you might be willing to share? Housewares, towels, sheets, pots,

furniture – all would be most appreciated. There are also two daughters’ early school

age. Father has found employment here in Lloydminster. Please speak to Rosemarie

Grant if you could help out.

Unfortunately, the modern government practice of putting out all forest fires has unintentionally fuelled even larger fires due to the buildup of underbrush and debris.

STEWARDSHIP SECONDS

The gospel according to Luke reminds us, “Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

GETTING TO KNOW OUR SUMMER STUDENTS BETTER...

This week's question... What does GOD mean to you?

Kathleen-  is somewhere I turn for advice and when in times of need. Someone who does not judge and always listens

Ashley- Love

Brenden- Life...nothing would be possible without him, everything around us is because of him, he’s my teacher.

Jonathan- My guardian in life who guides me through it and has a set destiny set for me. He has a reason for everything to happen.

ACTIVITY MORNINGS

This week welcomes another week of awesomeness!  Activity mornings start up again Tuesday, August 9th!  This week the Summer Students are requesting 500 ml Mason style jars for some sensory activities they are doing with the kids!  If you have some Spaghetti jars, Salsa jars or something similar to that size, we will be collecting until the end of the day Tuesday.  Please drop off cleaned jars with lids to Bev and Adelle in the office.  This week's lessons are on friendship, how to handle fears and being content with who we are.  Such powerful lessons!!!

CENTERING PRAYER

CALL TO WORSHIP

Are you weary and tired from the stresses of this week? Here we can unwind for this is the house of the

Lord. In it we will all find what we seek. The goodness of God has called us here. We are all the recipients

of God’s gracious love. Though we have not always done what is right in Gods sight, God is still merciful

and forgiving. Open our hearts and spirits to the refreshing love of God. Help us Lord to live joyfully and

peacefully in your sight. Let the word of God enter our hearts and spirits, washing away any weariness and

stress that has been our companion this week. Amen.

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER OF HEALING

Lord of all hope and peace, we your children have come this day asking for your mercy.

Grant us your pardon.

We have come this day seeking much needed peace in our ever-busy lives.  We seek the gift to be compassionate disciples for you.  We seek the gift of knowing how to pray.  We like those before us who are ready to learn your ways.

In your name we pray. Amen.

ACTIVITY MORNINGS

Holy Moly!  This week of activity mornings was busy, busy, busy!  Our summer students plus recruits of Valerie and Destiny supervised 23 kids throughout the week!  We look forward to another great week of activities next week.  The themes and books for the upcoming week are:  fitting in, celebrating the differences in our friends, and small acts of compassion and generosity. VBS

runs Monday, August 22 until Thursday, August 25.  We  are looking for storytellers to share scripture and bible stories.  Is this something you could help us with?  We need storytellers for the following days and times:

Mon, Aug 22 – 9:15-9:45 am; Tues, Aug 23 – 9:15-9:45 am;

Wed, Aug 24 – 9:15-9:45 am; Thurs, Aug 25 – 9:15-9:45 am

As Treaty people, we seek to live with respect on this land and live in peace and friendship with all our relations.

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER OF HEALING

Wonderous God, we come to you with busy minds and over-filled agendas,

we seek your wisdom and grace in our distracted lives.

As we walk bustling streets, busy markets and crowded stores, we easily miss your quiet lessons

in the cacophony of stuff ruling our lives,

we need to listen, to act and do things we don’t always want to do.

Hear our hearts, Holy Parent,

(silent prayers, meditation)

WORDS OF GRACE AND COMFORT

We come together to lay our lives aside, to be renewed and revitalized,

In our gathering, you call us and offer us strength, wisdom, and courage.

God has made us and Christ has made us anew!

Our hearts and hands are open to receive you, Jesus, as we pray in your name,

Amen!

Your job … find out the answer this week.  The answer will be revealed in next week’s bulletin

HOW DID YOU DO?  Last week’s answer was Compassion.

Question for you:  We are considering the value of the bulletin.  This doesn’t involve the announcements or office information at all as they would be included in the new format.  We would like feedback to make an informed decision whether to continue doing the bulletin in the future.  If you would like to give the office at call at 780-875-8959 or fill out a Gathering in Love pew pad sheet, it would be appreciated.  Please rate whether you would like to keep the bulletin – 1 or doesn’t matter – 10 and if you could perhaps elaborate on your decision this will make it easier to decide.  Thank you for your time and patience.

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER OF HEALING

O Holy God,

we come to offer you the moments we have lacked love in our hearts.

We have neither loved ourselves nor our neighbours.

We have passed by suffering and misfortune

because of fear, busyness or preoccupation.

We have held prejudices against people as deep as those against the Samaritans.

Heal our pains, amend our faults,

and guide us in ways of compassion.

We pray now, in the name of Jesus, your son,

our most beloved neighbour, who refreshes all through prayer and peace.

(silent prayers, meditation)

WORDS OF GRACE AND COMFORT

While we faulter and fail to recognize a need when it crosses our path,

You offer the gift of grace freely, so we might be refreshed to bravely try again.

You are made new and promised eternal life.

We believe!  We receive! We rejoice.

Thanks be to God. Amen.

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER OF HEALING – Gathering – Pentecost, 2022, D.A. Fisher – Forest hill U.C.

Loving Creator, we, your fragile children, sometimes neglect to see,

go and act faithfully.

We allow our wants, desires, need and emotions to control our actions.

Sometimes we speak harshly, even cruelly, and then, instantly regret our words.

We do nothing to heal the pain we have caused.

Coming humbly to you in prayer,

we share our faults and ask for your strength to be the people you know we can be.

We do this so we might remember and celebrate how near you are to our hearts.

(silent prayers, meditation)

WORDS OF GRACE AND COMFORT

Children of God,

even in the times we allow our needs to take precedence over the needs of others, know that God is aware of our actions and also our beautiful potential.

God knows that no matter how far we believe we have fallen,

there is always room for us to rise up and shine.

Know that God loves you just the way you are, free and faith-filled.

We go on our way, saying, ‘Peace to this house!’ Amen.

OPENING HYMN “Touch the Earthy Lightly” VU #307

Words: Shirley Erena Murray  Music: Colin Gibson

CANDLE LIGHTING “In the Quiet Stillness” Gladys Jack

“In the quiet stillness of creation, in the quiet stillness of home.

In the quiet stillness of our being, God reminds us that we’re not alone.”

CENTERING PRAYER

CALL TO WORSHIP

ONE: God welcomes all, strangers and friends.  God’s love is strong and it never ends.

ALL: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests; but the son of humanity has nowhere to lay his head.”

ONE: Our neighbors are hungry and poor; yet our neighborhood is the richest in the community.

ALL: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests; but the son of humanity has nowhere to lay his head.”

ONE: Many of our neighbours have been homeless for decades; yet our society sees them as riff-raff and human detritus.

ALL: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests; but the son of humanity has nowhere to lay his head.”

ONE: God loves us so much that God became our neighbor – a refuge, a homeless vagabond and a friend to the odd and undesirable.

ALL: Glory to God in Christ whose homeless body bore our hatred as an act of love for us all.  Amen.

HYMN “We are Pilgrims” VU #595 Words & Music: Richard Gillard

PRAYER OF HEALING

We need your healing love today, oh Lord,

Create us in a new heart of compassion,

As Christ has called us to be witnesses of redemption

rather than alienation.

Hold us gently.

Heal us.

Enable us to truly be your disciples,

As Treaty people, we seek to live with respect on this land and live in peace and friendship with all our relations.

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO GOD

PRAYER OF HEALING

In the presence of Creator, we gather:

People carrying burdens we may not know – all looking for comfort.

We come together in need of Spirit’s refreshment.

We gather hoping to sense and feel your presence – to be embraced in the arms of your love and understanding.

Babies, kids, youth, adults - all with questing spirits;

one minute confident, the next, like frightened children.

As adults we are called to take good paths, watching out for the next generations, passing on our teachings and wisdom.

All are kin in this meeting place, whether in person or through technology.

Our spirits join to say meegwaetch for the healing offered through prayer.

 (Time for prayer, meditation)

WORDS OF GRACE AND LOVE
All are worthy of Creator’s love and comfort.

Thanks be to God for the goodness and grace God provides. Amen.
